Hi Guys, newly diagnosed with RA, i feel a bit of a fraud after having 14 months of awful pain and deformed elbow, it has settled after having steroid injections and being put on medication, is this how it works? Any advice would be very gratefully received.
Thank You
Sally

Are you taking steroids such as Prednisolone? They often will bring the inflammation down quickly. I wonder what disease modifying anti rheumatic drugs you are on. Maybe Methotrexate? These type of drugs tend to take longer to work, sometimes quite a few months, so that's why the steroids are bought in early. RA can be really unpredictable.....and some people even go into an early remission. You're not a fraud. There are so many patterns of RA and everyone is different. I'm very sorry about your diagnosis but glad that it might be being successfully treated. Naomi, xxxx

Thanks for your quick reply, i had a couple of steroid injections last week when i finally saw a consultant. I don't know what i had because i had hand, feet and chest x-rays an ultra sound scan and blood tests, my head was fried when i got out 3 hours later! I have been put on sulfasalazine on a progressive dose and go back in three months time. Why all the x-rays?

Hi Sally

Welcome. I was just officially diagnosed 5 weeks ago so fully understand what your are experiencing.

I got chest, feet and hand x-rays done too and was told they were to see if any erosion has occurred on my hands and feet due to the RA. The chest x-ray is to give them a baseline to work from as RA can affect the lungs and also I think I am right in saying that some drugs can affect them too.

Hope to hear how you are getting on.

Hi Sally, and welcome to the forum, though I`m sorry you been diagnosed with RA.

Lisa has given a good explanation re the X-rays - at my hospital they take more X-rays periodically to check for any damage that may have been caused by the RA. I can well understand you feeling "fried" after your blood tests, X-rays etc. At my initial appointment they threw in a visit to the Occupational Therapist as well - I was reeling!

I was diagnosed in Jan 2006, and my first drug was sulphasalazine, like yourself - have they fixed up fortnightly blood tests? The steroid injections are brilliant - they sort of "tide you over" until the meds kick in, which can take 12 weeks sometimes.

You don`t say whether or not you have access to a rheumy nurse, who should be available on the end of a telephone - at least in theory, sadly not always in practice. They are a good source of help and support, at least mine certainly is.

If the sulpha doesn't work for you, there are other drugs out there.

I`m Kathleen, age 62, and I live up north in Durham.

Take care,

Kathleen x

Hello Sally, a big welcome from me.
Glad to hear you are getting sorted out. One thing I did not understand when first diagnosed is the very wide range of possible side effects and symptoms of R.A. that can present.
It is amazing how our experiences can differ.
Hope you have a good team looking after you, it makes the world of difference.
X-rays are a good start as long as they are taken notice of. I always ask about mine now.
The first rheumatologist I had seemed to be on the ball, but my present one does not inspire me with confidence.
Don't be afraid to ask and question if you are unsure.
hope to hear from you soon, Zena x
